About THE WHITMER ANCESTRY
THE WHITMER SAGA (as known so far) --- Northumberland Co.,PA. --- was formed from Lancaster,Berks,Cumberland,Northampton and Bedford Counties in 1772. Four brothers.Michael,Ulrich,Peter and John Witmer came from the Canton of Zurich,Switzerland,on the ship ``Hope of London`, `which arrived at Philadelphia in August 1733.All four brothers settled in Lancaster co., Peter later moving to Lebanon co.,where he died. The Peter` Witmers`later moved from Lebanon co.to Northumberland co. Whether we are descended from Michael,Ulrich ,Peter or John Witmer or none of them, your guess is as good as mine.My guess is Peter. There is a Whitmer road in Licking Twp Just out of Callensburg,PA.
You can travel part of it going to Mt.Zion cem.where many of my ancestors are buried. There are also 3 Whitmer ,Pa.s, Whitmer,Pa.in Centre co., Witmer,Pa.,in Lancaster co.,and Wittmer,Pa.,in Allegheny co. There is also a Whitmer,West Virginia. ---Clarion Co,PA.--- was formed from parts of Venango and Armstrong Co.in 1839. Joseph and Jacob Whitmer(Thought to
be brothers) arrived in the area which was to become Clarion Co.,shortly after it opened up in the early 1800`s. In Licking Twp.Clarion Co.,is the biggest concentration of `Whitmer`,`Whitmore` names in Western PA.It has been spelled both ways in the Federal Census. Most were farmers and probably illiterate,so the census takers recorded the way they thought it should be spelled. Jacob`s name may have been spelled `Witmer` before he came to the area. The Lancaster Co.area is predominantly `Witmer`s`. Jacob Whitmer and his wife Catharine (Reichard) Whitmer are
thought to be my GGGGrandparents.Samuel Whitmer and his wife Sarah Shrum Whitmer, daughter of Henry Shrum and Elizabeth (Kuhns,Kuntz) Shrum were my GGGrandparents and lived in Clarion Co.all their lives and are buried at Mt. Zion Cem. Callensburg,Clarion Co.,PA. ---Venango Co.,PA. --- Isaiah
Whitmer,my GGrandfather and his wife Elizabeth Whitmer, daughter of Phillp and Baris Casper and family came to Richland Twp.,Venango Co.,PA.about 1900.Their son William Mead Whitmer(my Grandfather) married Eva May Caldwell, daughter of James Addison Caldwell and Anna (McMurdy) Caldwell. Many of them and their descendants are
buried in Zion Union Cem.(Old Zion)near Emlenton,PA. The latest information suggests that the Whitmers may have come to Clarion Co. via Franklin Co.,PA. My father was Clifford Addison Whitmer b.6 Jan 1904 in Emlenton,PA. d.29 Apr 1974 in Butler,PA. buried at Zion Union Cem.(Old Zion) Emlenton,Pa
My mother was Grace Mae(Silvis)Whitmer b.28 Mar 1907 East Brady, Armstrong Co.,
